I studied fashion design at university because I wanted to learn and develop better construction skills and pattern making to be able to bring my designs to life.

Many hours of work go into the making of each item of clothing you wear. From the growing or creating of the fiber to the spinning weaving and processing into cloth. Then the designing, the pattern making, the testing and re-testing for style and fit, then finally the cutting sewing and finishing.

As a person I am ever evolving, that is my hope to always grow and develop. As a brand and an idea Rebecca Taylor Alexander will as grow and develop. We are always evolving, wanting better and learning the lessons to get there.

The textile itself is often the starting point and my designs grow out of that. I love anything that has a story behind it. Textile design was my first interest and fashion was something separate. Now the two are inextricably linked for me. I love craft, I am a maker.

All craft interests me, but I especially love textile craft. Natural dying holds a deep fascination. It is as old as textiles, as old as civilization. It is full of uncertainty and I love that, you have to relinquish control and let the magic and alchemy take place as it will. Natural dying feels in the entasis of factory made, mass manufactured. It is uncontrollable and unreplicatable. For me natural dying celebrates beauty, it celebrates the endless wonders of nature, it celebrates the unknown and the magic of mystery and transformation. It is a slow process that rewards patience with magnificent colour. It never ceases to amaze and fascinate me, frustrate and challenge me. There is so much with it to learn and discover.

Other textiles I like best to work with are ones that have a story to tell. Whether its heritage cotton that grows in subtle colours of brown and green and tan and pink or denim that has been remade out of preexisting denim. Merino farmed to the highest standard in New Zealand. I think the more our clothes have to say the more they will mean to us and be loved by us and worn and repaired and take on a story of their own that is inseparable from ours. That is my hope anyway. That each pieces of RTA clothing you own will be treasured and worn and loved as it should be. Love in it, laugh in it, cry in it. Live a good authentic life in it and be kind to each other and the beautiful planet we live on.

Each item I make has a purpose and each is made start to finish by my own hands in my studio. I like clothes that are comfortable and move with my body. I don’t want to feel restricted or constrained by the clothes I wear.

I often look to the past; I love looking back at past eras and seeing clothes that are still feel modern and relevant today. I love vintage work wear and pretty blouses and dresses. I want my clothes to allow each person’s uniqueness to shine through and to be loved and cherished and add value to the people who wear and care for them.

I started sewing consistently after moving to New Zealand. I had a love for sewing clothes and a desire to be able to create the designs I could see in my mind.
